(0)The incomparable Elaine Stritch is doing Beckett’s Endgame in New York:
(0)I always remember the story of the woman who understudied Lena Horne in some Broadway musical. And she was told she was going to go on that night because Lena had lost her voice. And the understudy said, “Oh, wonderful!” She said she just needed a certain kind of eye shadow she had to pick out herself. And she was going to go out to one of the drugstores on Eighth Avenue and she’d be right back. And she went to Philadelphia instead. Isn’t that a great story? And it’s true. I understand it perfectly. I love the fact that she went to Philadelphia. What a story. And that’s an example of Beckett’s unhappiness being the funniest thing in the world.
In New York there’s a Brazilian restaurant called Churrascaria Plataforma that specialises meat in all shapes and seizes:
(0)At Churrascaria, diners signal their appetites with a dual-sided coaster resembling a poker chip: Green side up, more meat. Red side up, stop!
Grow Your Own (2007) 3.5/5
2008-06-23 13:00
"... contains plenty of diverting comic moments while never losing sight of the human stories unfolding close at hand, reminding us that Social Workers may well be the heroes of the 21st century."
0.3The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian... 3.5/5

"The usual cross-cultural misunderstandings occur but the characters all grow on you, much like India grows on our hero."

"Shyamalan has obvious talent as a director: he has an eye for an arresting image and has seen enough Hitchcock to construct effective set-pieces but he can’t write dialogue that human beings can actually say which continually drops the audience out of the moment."

"There are plenty of jokes per minute and the relentless teasing of Israelis for their love of fizzy drinks, hummus, disco and hacky-sack is pretty entertaining."

2008-06-14 13:00
"I was one of many who found Crash to be appalling, un-watchable, rubbish but Elah (perhaps because it doesn’t try and do so much) is better."
0.3The Incredible Hulk (2008) 2.5/5
2008-06-13 18:00
"... a bit of a noisy mess, but far from disastrous."

"Clumsily condensed and fussily directed, Brick Lane never quite overcomes it’s own clichés."
0.3Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) 2.5/5
2008-06-08 17:45
"... I think the reason why Happy-Go-Lucky fails is the lack of empathy for the characters (possibly caused by Leigh not having actors like Brenda Blethyn and Timothy Spall to make the emotional connections for him)."

“Gosling’s performance is a thing of wonder but it wouldn’t be half as successful without great work from Paul Schneider, Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson to play off. Kudos to them all. Not to be missed.”

"I think the key to Dylan is that he is less complicated (and at the same time more complex) than the world would have you believe and he fully deserves a work of art as fine as this one in his name.
